I generally work in gouache, a matte opaque water-based paint traditionally used by illustrators and animators. I love it for the saturated color, velvety matte finish, and the way it brings a little midcentury flavor to the way I paint light and shadow. Lately, I have begun layering my gouache with glitter, sequins, rhinestones, and resin in order to add some textural contrast to my already high-contrast work and to explore the idea of color maximalism in a mixed media way, but also I just really love sparkle.
Original mixed media painting of a couple of super sparkly red cherries on a 4x4 wood panel. I added glitter and sequins to my original gouache painting and sealed the panel with glossy artist-grade resin. Panel is 7/8” deep and comes with a sawtooth hanger.
