I generally work in gouache, a matte opaque water-based paint traditionally used by illustrators and animators. I love it for the saturated color, velvety matte finish, and the way it brings a little midcentury flavor to the way I paint light and shadow. Recently, I have begun layering my gouache with glitter, sequins, rhinestones, and resin to add another dimension of contrast to my already high-contrast work and to explore the idea of color maximalism in a different medium, but probably mostly because I really love sparkle.
Original gouache painting of an aqua and orange roller skate wheel on a 4”x4” panel. I added a late 70’s song lyric (“you have to believe we are magic”) and a whole bunch of super sparkly glitter, then sealed the the panel with glossy artist-grade resin. Panel is 7/8” deep and comes with a sawtooth hanger.
